Using Black Sage
When I was first learning about herbs, black sage showed up everywhere. It was what we blended with, what we smudged with, what we learned to respect first. In many parts of the country, black sage has always been the more accessible and familiar relative, used for clearing spaces, settling the nervous system, and marking moments of transition.
Black sage burns a bit deeper and smokier than white sage, with a grounding quality that feels steady rather than sharp. It’s a beautiful choice for cleansing a room, starting a meditation, setting intentions, or simply resetting the energy after a long day. Light the tip, let it catch, gently blow out the flame, and allow the smoke to drift where it’s needed.
We highly recommend pairing your smudge with a smudge bowl or abalone shell to catch ash and keep things tidy while you work. Move slowly, stay present, and remember that smudging doesn’t have to be dramatic. Sometimes it’s just a quiet conversation between you, the smoke, and the space you’re in. ?
